Catalogue Use by Undergraduates of University of Abuja, Abuja - FCT

Abstract

The study focused on catalogue use by undergraduate students at university of Abuja. It investigates how the catalogue was used and the problem faced in the use of catalogue. The data for the study was gathered using questionnaire that was randomly administered to the undergraduate students in the faculty of Arts, Education, Law, Science, Management Science and Social Science. Data for the study was collected using self-designed questionnaire and interview. A total of six hundred undergraduate students were randomly selected, where one hundred students represented each of the selected faculties. The data collected for the study was analysed through descriptive statistics such as percentages. Findings revealed that undergraduate students who formed the bulk of library users do not use the library catalogue. It was also revealed that many of the students lacked the practical knowledge to use the library catalogue, and the catalogue does not match with the books on the shelves. It was therefore recommended that, library orientation program organised for students should include both theory and practical where students can have a tour of the library. Also, lecturers should endeavour to constantly give assignment to their students that will enable them search for literature in the library. Refilling of the catalogue cards in the cabinet should be revisited as well as placing directional guides that lead students to where catalogue cards are filed in the cabinet.
