Abstract
This study assessed indoor air quality in residential building in Gwagwalada town, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria. Data was sourced from primary and secondary sources; primary data was collected through air quality reading and administration of questionnaire while secondary sources was from published and unpublished materials such as journals, textbooks, research projects, among others. Simple stratified systematic sampling was used in selecting the sampling locations. planned (Phase I and Phase III/Kontagora estate), unplanned (Agwan Dodo, Dagiri, Agwan Bassa). A sample size of three hundred and eighty-four (384) respondents were interviewed from the study area. The result shows values of the concentration of PM2.5 (mg3) and CO (ppm) is lowest in the morning in Phase 1 with 0.08±0.01mg3 and 1.3±0.5ppm respectively and highest value of PM2.5 in Dagiri and Angwan-dodo with 0.12±0.027mg3 and CO in Agwan-dodo with 2.5±0.67ppm. lowest value of SO2 of 0.003±0.004ppm was obtained in Agwan-Bassa while the highest value of 0.012±0.004ppm was obtained in Agwan-dodo. More also, lowest morning value for ammonia of 0.0042±0.004ppm was obtained in Phase 1 while highest value was obtained in Dagiri with 0.01±0.007ppm followed by Agwan-dodo with 0.009±0.003ppm. Housing of the study area has no record of methane and hydrosulphide. The value obtained in the morning for particulate matter and sulphur dioxide, is less than Federal ministry of environment standard of 0.25mg3 andn0.01ppm while value obtained in the evening is higher than the set standard. Mean values of other parameters (carbon monoxide, nitro dioxide, methane, oxide, hydrosulphide and ammonia) recorded for morning and evening were below Federal Ministry of Environment standard. The result shows that 56.06% of sample residents has no open space within their compound while 43.56% had open space within their compound. The findings also revealed that 29.55% of the population house is 1meter distance from the next house and 74.62% had one toilet in the home. Mean values of other parameters (carbon monoxide, nitro dioxide, methane, oxide, hydrosulphide and ammonia) recorded for morning and evening were below Federal Ministry of Environment standard. The result shows that 56.06% of sample residents has no open space within their compound while 43.56% had open space within their compound. The findings also revealed that 29.55% of the population house is 1meter distance from the next house and 74.62% had one toilet in the home. The finding shows that the factors responsible for the nature of air quality in Gwagwalada are; human activities (light industries, combustion of gas from automobiles, poor housing facilities and structures among others. Therefore, there should be a Periodic assessment of the air quality indoor so as to monitor the air quality in the study area.
