| dc.description.abstract | This research work investigated the effects of subject-verb concord instruction on Upper Basic three students’ performance in English in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria. To achieve this objective, seven research objectives, seven research questions as well as seven research hypotheses were formulated. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design comprising experimental and control groups) for the study. The Researcher also reviewed some related literatures during which some previous studies relating to the topic were also reviewed. The population for the study was eighteen (18) Upper Basic Schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria. A sample size fifty (50) U.B three students each was for the experimental and control groups respectively. The actual schools used for the study were selected using non-random convenient sampling technique. However simple random sampling technique was used to select the particular classes on which the intervention was carried out. Ten test questions each were set on the five areas of subject-verb concord in this study. To ascertain the validity and the reliability of the instrument, experts and my supervisors vet the instrument. A pilot test was also conducted on thirty (30) U.B. three students from Upper Basic School Hajj Camp, Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria. The researcher administered pre-test and post test to the experimental and control groups respectively to determine the effects of subject-verb concord instruction on the students’ academic achievement in English Language. The researcher used a t-test to analyze the data collected from the students’ pre-test and post test. The result of the analysis of the data collected for the research led to the following findings (among others); the students in experimental group subject-verb concord had a higher mean score than the students in the control group in the post test. The researcher therefore concluded that subject-verb concord instruction has remarkable effects on U.B. three students’ academic achievement in English Language in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria. Based on the findings, the Researcher made these recommendations among others; subject-verb instruction should be incorporated in the school curriculum by the curriculum planners. Students should be taught subject-verb concord from at least basic four classes to form part of their foundations to learning English grammar. Real objects should be considered as first instructional resources when teaching singular subject-verb concord. Teachers should set questions on subject-verb concord in every terminal examination to get the students acquainted with these rules. | |
