BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY AND NIGERIA ECONOMY UNDER JONATHAN ANID BUHARI PEGIMES

Abstract

This work examined the Boko Haram Insurgency and Nigerian Economy under Presidents Jonathan and Buhari (2011-2019). The far-reaching impact of the crisis arguably provided the context to explain the rate of poor service delivery, poverty, religious activism, unemployment, illiteracy and general underdevelopment as frameworks for violence. The main objective of the thesis is to ascertain how Boko Haram emergence and violent activities has impacted the socio economic development of Nigeria with particular reference to Borno State. The study used historical and exploratory research design method of data collection. It employed questionnaire to collect relevant primary data. The data obtained from the field were both qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using explanatory approach. The theoretical framework adopted in this study is the Marxist political economy theory. The findings revealed among other things that the failure of government to provide development to transform human conditions in Borno State was the reason why people embraced alternative religious proposal. Also, that Boko Haram insurgency is an attempt to reduce the gap created between the bourgeoisie and proletariat in the state. It then concludes that the political economy of Borno state; being the headquarters of Boko Haram has been badly affected by the menace. One of the major recommendations is for the government to sustain the ongoing de- radicalization and counter radicalization programme to change the way they think. Also, government at all levels should evolve programmes that will bring about sustainable development, create enabling environment for economic growth and development, infrastructural development, poverty alleviation, health and education etc.
